A lot has happened in 2012 in the world of comics… like a lot. There was a whole mess of new (and pretty great) titles from everyone in the industry, non-stop crossovers, and enough controversy to fill a green sugar cane snake tree… or something. Anyway, here’s what I’m really looking forward to in 2013!
Yeah I said it! You wanna fight about it? Come on then! BRING IT! In all seriousness though Dan Slott must have balls of steel to do this, and I respect it. Granted I’m not a huge Peter Parker fan so I’m not as attached to the characters as some of you out there may be (I still think the death threats Dan Slott received are a bit over the top though) but regardless I’m not going to condemn a writer, who has delighted me time and time again, for doing something new. Also I’m a sucker for a good villain story. What you can’t deny though is that clearly Dan Slott isn’t afraid to change the status quo, which is great because who the hell knows what’s going to happen next! And even if you disagree with me on all of that, you can’t deny that Spidey-Ock has people talking and it’s getting coverage in mainstream media which will lead to more people buying this book and then hopefully some others. Also Ryan Stegman on art, how can you not like this book!
Okay I know this one is a bit obvious, but I don’t just mean I’m looking forward to more Batman. The past year has been great… for most of the Bat family anyway, for others not so much. We’ve just had two huge back to back crossover events, which was a bit much in my opinion, now don’t get me wrong I love Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo as much as the next guy but the Joker showing up in pretty much every issue of every Bat book for the past few months has just been a bit annoying, especially since not so long ago we had the court of owls showing up in every single Bat book. I’m looking forward to a Bat universe where we see Damian do his own thing, Barbara face off against her brother, Tim Drake in a well written book for a change, find out what Scott Snyder has planned out for Harper Row and basically have the Bat family do their own thing without being caught up in Batman’s issues every other week (and pleaseeee let Batman Inc. be cancelled when Grant leaves so I can just pretend it was in its own continuity the whole time, the continuity obsessed fanboy inside of me craves it). I guess this is more of a wish for 2013, I’m not sure if it’ll come to pass. We’ll have to wait and see.
Scott Snyder/Jim Lee Superman book
I’ve want to like Superman so hard, really I do. I want to love him and every book he’s in! It’s freaking Superman, one of the most iconic fictional characters ever created. But I can’t love him, I can’t even like him because both of his books are pretty crap. The current ongoing Superman series has been floating between mediocre and bad ever since The New 52 kicked off and Action Comics while good at times, is completely insane and makes no sense the rest of time. I was pumped for the ‘H’el on earth’ storyline and the new creative team on the book a few months back (Scott Lobdell and Kenneth Rocafort), but aside from the art being amazing in every single issue, Superman has had a pretty terrible year. But all that is set to change… maybe… I hope, with a new ongoing Superman title being launched later this year by none other than Scott Snyder and the one and only Jim Lee. If they can’t make an amazing Superman book for ‘The New 52’ then who can?
New Image Comics
What else is there to say? I mean 2012 was the year of Image Comics, pretty much everything they released was a smashing success. So how can I not be excited about upcoming titles like Feel Better Now, East Of West and Three? Really! Tell me how not to be excited!! The excitement is excruciating at times! I can’t sleep! HELP!
Ultimate Comics X-Men
I cannot emphasize enough how much I dislike you if you’re not reading and enjoying this series. Aside from a few minor bumps in the road a few issues back (are people actually coming back to life? Hmm Psylocke…) this book is nothing short of spectacular, and arguable one of the best X-Men book on the shelves, yet if flies under a lot of peoples radar because of all the crazy goodness that’s going on in All-New, Uncanny and WAT X-Men titles. The past year has seen some pretty big developments and in a very clever way the end result is a situation that mirrors where the 616 Marvel universe was a few years back, although the circumstances here are completely different. Whatever happens, I can tell you without any doubt this will be a very interesting year for Ultimate Comics X-Men and the oh so awesome Ultimate Kitty Pryde.

What the heck Jason Aaron is going to do to follow up this god killer story arc in Thor God Of Thunder!?!
I’m going to be doing a big catch up on all of the Buffy and Angel comics, I’m currently rewatching both shows to prepare myself. Can’t wait to see what Joss Whedon and the conglomerate of great writers Dark Horse have assembled have in store for me (that conglomerate includes Brian K. Vaughn!!! Yeah that’s right! The guy that wrote Y: The Last Man and Saga!!).
Geoff Johns, Geoff Johns and what’s that? More Geoff Johns! ‘Throne of Atlantis’ in Aquaman, ‘The Third Army’ in Green Lantern and Justice League of America with Martian Manhunter backups!
My first universe wide DC crossover in ‘The Trinity War’! I have of course read others, but this will be the first one I’ll be reading as it comes out!
Young Avengers! This was almost in the main section, then I read the first issue and I was a bit disappointed… but still Young Avengers are back!!
On-going Image Titles!! Saga and The Manhattan Projects in particular, but co-editors Tim and Shiv would have my balls on a platter if I didn’t mention The Walking Dead too. This would have been a bigger point like those above but I feel like the majority of articles on PDK are just us gushing over those three image books so…
What’s going to happen with Cyclops?!
